I’ve been wanting to change my hairstyle for a while now, I wanted to go for something bold, like dying my hair pink. But, I was honestly too scared to do something that bold. So, I took baby steps and decided to go for something that would still look good but wasn’t that big of a change. I got a balayage or just simply dyed the ends of my hair a bit lighter. And you heard that right! I did it by myself. Honestly, I didn’t have time, or wanted to spend a lot of money at the salon. So, Sally Beauty came to the rescue with the Intensive Shine Ion Hair Color Kits. They’re so easy to use and the finish is amazing. I love how it turned out to be and I still can’t believe I did this by myself at my dorm in less than two hours.
Also, this was my first time dying my hair and I was honestly prepared for it to turn out a mess and chopping my hair off. So, if I could do this, then anyone can dye their hair at home without any problems. Here, I’ll guide you through the process of dyeing your hair at home step by step and I’ll give you some tips ;).
If you don’t know what color to get, ask!
Choosing a color is basically the hardest step. While browsing the Sally Beauty’s website, I was just asking myself if the color actually looked like in the pictures and if it’d look the same in my hair. The first time, I got the colors wrong, I was a complete newbie at dying my hair and I didn’t ask, so I got a shade too dark and didn’t see a change in my hair color. If you’re unsure of what dye to get, Sally Beauty has an excellent customer service! You can call, send them an email or just chat with a color specialist through their website.
Read the instructions
If you’re something like me, you’ll assume it’s obvious what to do and you won’t read the instructions. BIG MISTAKE! Always read the instructions carefully, to avoid any mishaps. It only takes a couple minutes!
While dying your hair, wear gloves at all times
Yes, I know what you are thinking. This is a bit obvious. And while it is, it also isn’t. You could take your gloves off as soon as you’re done applying the dye to your hair. But what you don’t know if that if your arm/hand touches your hair while you still have the dye on, your hair won’t be the only thing dyed. I accidentally touched my hair and my hand was brown for like 3 days…

How To Dye Your Hair At Home
Alright, once you order the dye and it arrives, it’ll be something like this. I decided to get 2 shades, just in case one of them was too dark. Joke’s on me because both were too dark…
Anyways, inside the box there is the hair color, a 10 volume developer, gloves and, before and after-color treatment masks.
Before starting the process
- Your hair has to be clean, but you have to wait 24h after washing it to apply the dye.
- Comb your hair through but don’t make it wet
- Wrap a towel over your shoulder to prevent any t-shirts from getting stained. Or just wear a t-shirt you don’t mind getting ruined.
- Apply lip balm along your hairline, from preventing your skin from getting stained.
Step 1: Read the instructions
This goes without saying, just read them carefully.
Step 2: Put gloves on
Step 3: Apply Pre-Color Treatment Hair mask
This mask f cream is to prevent your hair for getting damaged. With your gloves on, just start applying it evenly. Since I was just going to dye the ends of my hair, I just applied it there. I didn’t apply any product on my scalp. \
Step 4: Mix the dye and the developer
Open the developer’s bottle, without breaking the tip, and pour the tint’s bottle content into it. Close the developer’s bottle and shake it. After your done shaking it and you can see a well mixed consistency, break the tip.
Step 5: Separate your hair into sections
Again, this depends on whether you want to dye the roots or just the ends or all of it.
I just wanted to dye the ends, so I separated my hair into 2 sections.
Step 6: Apply Product
I applied a lot of product evenly on the tips of my hair and then I combed it through to make the color transition smooth and even. I even applied a little bit of product on the comb and combed it through my hair.
While I didn’t use a color brush and din’t feel the need to, I’ve heard it helps a lot!
Step 7: Wait
Set up a timer and just wait. You should usually wait about 30-45 minutes. You can put on a face mask and relax or reply emails and be productive.
Step 8: Wash hair
Rinse hair throughly and then wash with shampoo to remove completely the mix. Don’t apply conditioner.
Step 9: Apply After-color treatment
Towel dry your hair a bit and then apply the after color treatment to nourish your hair. Wait about 5 minutes and then rinse it throughly.
And that’s it, just in 9 steps you changed your hairstyle! When I told my sister and mom I was dyeing my hair alone at home, they almost got a heart attack. But, it’s so easy to use and I really like the results. I often heard that sometimes when you dye your hair, it looks dry and dull after, but this dye is amazing! I did my feel my hair go thiner, but it was shine and it looked awesome, it wasn’t dry at all after. Totally recommend, just don’t make the same mistake I did and get the color right!
