Winter Destinations for Snow Lovers
If your ideal winter involves actual snow, dreamy alpine towns, and activities that require layers, this section is for you.
Tromsø, Norway

Dreaming of the Northern Lights? Tromsø is your spot! Enjoy reindeer sledding, reindeer safaris, and snowshoeing.
The real highlight, though, is the chance to see the northern lights in the sky. Don’t forget to check out the local Sami culture to complete your trip.
Banff, Canada

Picture this: snowy mountains, hot springs, and cozy cabins. Banff is a winter wonderland that’s perfect for both adventure and relaxation.
Hit the slopes at Lake Louise, take a scenic gondola ride, or enjoy a peaceful snowshoe hike through the forest. After a day in the cold, warm up in the soothing Banff Upper Hot Springs.
Lapland, Finland

Lapland is the ultimate winter travel destination, and I’m dying to spend Christmas there! There you’ll find Husky sledding rides, ice hotels, and Santa’s Village, which is what makes it so magical. Explore snowy forests, try your hand at ice fishing, or simply enjoy the cozy charm of a log cabin. You can also see the northern lights from here!
Big Sky, Montana

Big Sky is actually going to be a trending destination in 2026, according to Expedia. It’s basically a winter playground without the crazy crowds that come with places like Aspen or Jackson Hole. Expect endless ski terrain, sweeping mountain views, luxury lodges, hot tubs under the stars, and some of the best snow in the U.S.
If you’re into skiing, snowmobiling, or just cozy cabin life, Big Sky is the spot to bookmark for 2026. It’s rugged, gorgeous, and peaceful.
Aspen, Colorado

For ski enthusiasts, Aspen is the place to be. Hit the slopes during the day and enjoy après-ski experiences at night. Even if you’re not a skier, Aspen’s streets and snowy landscapes make it a stunning spot for a winter escape.
Savoie, France

Think quiet alpine villages, wooden chalets, world-class ski slopes, and cheese fondue that hits differently when it’s below freezing. It’s less chaotic than Chamonix and a little more nostalgic, which is probably why travel experts are predicting it’ll be one of Europe’s top winter picks for 2026.
Spend your days skiing or snowboarding, hop between cozy mountain restaurants, and soak in the views of snow-covered peaks that honestly look like a postcard. It’s the kind of winter escape that feels luxe without trying too hard.
Zermatt, Switzerland

Zermatt is simply gorgeous. Nestled in the Swiss Alps, this charming village is home to world-class skiing, cozy chalets, and breathtaking views of the Matterhorn. This section is all about unique landscapes, bucket-list activities, and places where winter feels like the perfect time to explore. Whether it’s hiking through volcano-lined lakes, spotting wildlife, or backpacking through rugged terrain, these destinations are for your inner explorer.
Lake Atitlán, Guatemala

I visited Lake Atlitan in December, and it was such a gorgeous and magical place. The weather is perfect at this time of year, with chilly mornings and toasty days.
You can do kayaking or paddleboarding in the lake, go on a hike during sunset, and visit the surrounding villages. Each village around the lake has its own unique character–from the bustling markets of Santiago Atitlán to the hippie vibe of San Marcos, there is something for everyone. And just a couple of hours away, you’ll find Antigua, where we hiked a volcano to see it erupting–it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Kruger National Park, South Africa

Trade the cold for a warm safari in Kruger National Park. Winter in the Northern Hemisphere means summer in South Africa, making it an ideal time to explore this wildlife haven: spot lions, elephants, giraffes, and more on a guided safari tour. With luxurious lodges and breathtaking landscapes, Kruger offers a unique blend of adventure and comfort.
Queenstown, New Zealand

Queenstown is the ultimate destination for adventure, offering everything from sky diving and jet boating to hiking and mountain biking. Petra, Jordan

Petra is a must-visit destination, especially during the cooler winter months when you can explore its beauty without the intense summer heat. Begin your journey through the narrow Siq, a canyon that leads you to this UNESCO World Heritage Site. For those seeking a truly unforgettable experience, visit Petra at night when the city is illuminated by thousands of candles, creating a magical atmosphere.
Before You Plan Your Trip…
A few things I always do before booking a winter getaway (learned the hard way):
- Check the weather: Winter varies a lot; Iceland in January is not the same as Sedona in February.
- Check daylight hours: Winter days are short, especially in Norway or Alaska, and it totally changes how you plan your activities.
- Look up seasonal closures: some museums, trails, and restaurants shut down in the winter.
- Book activities early: anything Northern lights, ski passes, or festive tours tend to sell out months in advance.
- Check if specialized gear is needed: layers, boots, thermal sets, wool socks, and winter beauty products make a huge difference.
- Look at transportation: Shuttles, train schedules, or snow-road closures can dictate where you stay.
- Book accommodations early: winter is high season for ski towns + holiday cities. Booking.com usually has the best cancellation options.
- Look into travel insurance: Winter storms = flight delays and cancellations.
Whether you’re craving adventure, relaxation, or festive vibes, these winter vacation destinations have something special to offer. From snowy mountains to sunny beaches and everything in between, these locations promise unforgettable experiences. So, pack your bags and make 2025 and 2026 your best winter yet! Which spot is calling your name?
