This last weekend I went with my sister to get our nails done. I usually get a normal manicure, but my sister recommended I try Nexgen nails. And honestly, after all of those videos going viral on social media and how aesthetically pleasing the process looked, I decided to try it out! I opted for summer neon nails, since they looked amazing on Pinterest.
What are Nexgen nails?
If you don’t know what Nexgen nails are, I got you. Nexgen is similar to acrylic nails, but the nail polish comes in powder form. Essentially, if you want longer nails, the tip will get glued to your natural nails, your nail beds will be buffed, and then your nails will be dipped in the powder. Unlike acrylic or gel, there is no need for UV or LED lights, the powder or polish will naturally dry within 5 minutes. Nexgen manicures last up to 3 weeks, which is why many people opt to get them.
What is the price?
The price varies depending on the city. I got them at a salon in South Florida and paid $45 for the whole thing. It is important to mention, I didn’t get tips, so if you do get the tips, expect to pay more. I think the price is definitely worth it if it lasts for 3-4 weeks.
What is the process like?
The first step is to remove any leftover nail polish. After, they buff your nail beds a bit to remove the glossy layer of your nail. I am not sure about the scientific reason for this, but I guess that that way the powder sticks better. Next, they proceeded to glue the nail tips to my nails. Be careful the glue touches your skin because it burns. (I stopped getting nexgen, gel, or acrylyc manicures because I wanted to focus on using non-toxic products. And now looking back, something that burns your skin should not be applied anywhere in your body).
After the nail tips are glued, they use a drill-like device to buffer the tips so they blend in seamlessly with your natural nails. And then, the exciting moment came. I got to dip my fingers in the powder!
Soon after I got this manicure, I found out that for hygienic reasons your manicurist should not dip your finger in the powder container, but rather sprinkle that powder onto your finger. This is because many people dipping their fingers in the same pot of powder can spread skin infections. So, look out for that!

How to remove Nexgen nails
The process to remove Nexgen nails is very simple and it is something you can do at home.
- Buff your nails with a nail file to remove the shiny polish on top.
- Soak a cotton ball in nail polish remover.
- Put that soaking cotton ball on top of your nail.
- Grab a piece of aluminum foil. Put it over and wrap your finger with it, so that the cotton ball stays in place.
- Wait 15 to 20 minutes and remove.

I absolutely loved having my nails look so good, but when I took the gel nails off, my natural nails were damaged. I am someone who struggles to get my nails to grow and not break, so I am concerned about any long-term effects. Either way, I think I would only get these types of manicures done for special occasions!
