Well, as a sorority girl to prove my loyalty to the house I had to exchange sexual favors and I had to run around campus completely naked. During that entire time, I was also constantly hazed, as well as my pledge sisters…
Oh, wait, that happened in some random college movie.
Those who have been reading my blog know I’m in a sorority. And if you’re reading this you are probably curious to know how is it like to be a sorority girl. Maybe you think that sorority life is like in the movies, where people party everyday and life is wild, and there is hazing, but it’s quite not like that. What happens in movies is totally different to real life. Sororities aren’t about drinking and partying 24/7, they are about representing a group of women and the values they represent while making life-long friendships and also they’re a LOT of fun.
Whether if you’re considering to join a sorority or if you’re just curious, I hope this gives you an insight. But just keep in mind that sorority life varies from chapter to chapter and from campus to campus.

Sorority girls are ALWAYS busy
I joined a sorority fall semester of my freshman year and now I’m fully initiated and I’m an active member. So, the first thing is that as a sorority girl, I’m ALWAYS busy. We have sorority events like socials, sisterhoods and meetings. Aside from that, we have school work, maybe community service and even more meetings if we belong to some other organization. So, life is pretty busy and managing our time can sometimes be (really) hard but then again I love it.
Some sorority events are always optional, so this allows us to be as involved as we want to be. And honestly, it all depends on how you manage your time. I know some girls that have a part-time job, are in a sorority, have good grades and also are a part of other organizations. I have no idea how they do it, but it is possible somehow.
There are rules
I guess this depends on the chapter but there are some rules we have to follow. For example, we have to maintain a good GPA, we have to attend meetings and we can’t post anything sexual or that involves illegal activity on social media. These rules are self-explanatory and easy to follow but there are consequences if you break them. In the worst case your membership could be revoked.

Sisterhood
Joining a sorority is the best decision I could have made my freshman year. I met so many amazing girls. When you join a sorority you don’t just make friends, but you automatically have sisters for life. I know my sisters always have my back and I know I can always rely on them. It doesn’t matter if I’m not close to one of them, I know that at the end they’ll look out for me just as I’d do.
Besides, you always have someone to do stuff with you. And what amazes me is the diversity we have in our chapter. I’m a fashion design major and if I hadn’t joined a sorority I wouldn’t have met pre-med majors or engineering majors. And by diversity, I not only mean different majors, but also different backgrounds and ethnicities.
Some people judge you for being in a sorority
I feel like sororities sometimes get a bad rap. Some people misunderstand what a sorority is an what it means. They think sorority girls don’t care about school and that all we do is partying, binge drinking and sleeping around.

It can get expensive
At the beginning of each semester we have to pay dues – the amount varies in each chapter. And throughout the semester there are other fees, like mandatory donations, raising money, and sometimes we have to pay fines if we can’t attend some mandatory events or if we don’t raise enough money.
I’m not complaining in any way, but I’m just trying to be as transparent as possible to let you know exactly how is it like. Sometimes it can get a little bit expensive, and I know a couple girls who dropped out because of it. But also keep in mind that sororities have payment plans to make it easier.
It is a lot of fun
Despite what people might think, being a sorority girl is fun and rewarding! Not only you have sisters, but there also so many fun activities within your chapter or with other greek organizations. It is also an amazing way to be involved around campus and give back to the community.
