Fashion is amazing, but sometimes can be exhausting. If you struggle for inspiration, or you can be indecisive when it comes to creating looks, here are some simple style rules. These rules will definitely make your life easier when deciding what to wear!
Dressing for the occasion
There are times in life when it’s appropriate to dress up, but if you’re just going for lunch or you’re off to watch a movie, you probably don’t want to dig out your Saturday night sparkle dress. Dressing for the occasion might be hard sometimes, like when you’re invited to a party and are just trying to figure out what you’ll girlfriends will wear. It’s actually an art to dress perfectly for the ocassion but there are certain tips that definitely help.
If you’re going to a party and there’s a smart dress code, there are many ways to interpret this. You don’t have to opt for an LBD just because everybody else is. Dressing for the occasion doesn’t mean you have to dress like everybody else. It would also be appropriate to wear a tailored jumpsuit, a blazer and cigarette pants, a maxi dress or a pencil or midi skirt with a top… there are so many options out there. Once you know the tone and vibe of the event, you can choose an outfit that satisfies the criteria and suits your individual style.
Customize
If you’re keen to jazz up basic items or to put your personal touch on garments that are selling out on every website, customization is a brilliant idea. You can turn even the most basic top into a unique style statement. And you can even fill your wardrobe with personalized items nobody else will have. Take a look at sites like InkPressions to get some ideas, and use your creativity. Customizing clothing can also work really well if you have an item of clothing in mind that you can’t find in a physical or online store.
Also, why not check those DIY videos on youtube? Fun fact: when I was little I used to do those all the time and my mom would get mad at me for just ruining my clothes… oops, sorry mom.
The price doesn’t matter, but the right combination does
I’m a big advocate of sticking to a budget when shopping. After all, not everyone can afford a Chanel bag right now. I don’t think it matter how expensive your clothes are, if you don’t combine them right. What’s the point of wearing a Valentino sweater if you’re just creating an awful outfit. Or, maybe your entire outfit could be from forever 21, but you did a great job combining the items and it looks amazing. Everything depends on how you mix and match your clothes.
Play around with different sizes
Maybe an oversized coat would look better than the one that perfectly fits you. Same with sweatshirts and even pants, hence the “oversized trend”. But, you should also play around with different lengths, whether it’s cropped pants or flared and long pants. It’s always a good idea to try something different.
Less is more
Try to limit your outfit to 1 or 2 points of focus. For example, if you combine animal print pants, with a bold and bright sweater and you add a flashy necklace and big earrings… well, that’s just too much and can look overwhelming. Sometimes, keeping it simple it’s the best thing you can do. For this, I always try to stick to the 1 or 2 focus points rule. Choose 1 or 2 statement items and then just complement them with neutral pieces.
Accessories are important
I wrote a whole post about how to transform an outfit with accessories and also about 5 accessories that are essential. But to sum all of that up in one sentence – accessories can make or break an outfit.
Sometimes too many accessories are just too much and sometimes an outfit without accessories looks just too simple. It’s definitely hard to find a balance and to find what looks best for you according to your style. But just play around with it and experiment with different accessories and different ways to use them. An example would be to use a silk scarf tied in your purse handle instead of your neck.
Create a capsule wardrobe
Keeping up to date with the latest trends can be pricey. And not everyone can afford to buy a whole new wardrobe every season. If you like to stay on-trend at all times, but you don’t want to break the bank, create a capsule wardrobe. This involves investing in high-quality basics that you wear all year-round and adding a few statement pieces each season. The idea is that you use accessories and mix and match your staple items to create a whole lot of different looks without spending a fortune.
Take a casual wardrobe, for example. Your basics may include crew neck jumpers, plain white and black tees, slim-fit jeans, some sneakers and a pleated midi skirt. In the winter, you can add an oversized cardigan, a parka, a couple of scarves and a teddy coat to give you access to a bunch of looks. And you could also add a couple items that are on trend that season. For next spring an example would be: oversized hats and tie dye. In the summer, you can swap sneakers for pumps or sandals and cardigans for lightweight denim shirts, for example. It’s just a lot of mix and matching and creating new looks with the same items, while also adding a couple trendy pieces each season.
Confidence is key
For me, the way I dress and the way I look is a huge confidence booster. I dress for myself, I dress the way I do to make myself feel better and also to express myself. Be confident with what you wear, if you don’t feel like yourself wearing something, then change it up and make it your style. After all, fashion is all about expressing and embracing yourself. And never forget to have fun with it!
